In this increasingly digitalised age it feels like I'm losing my grip on my music collection. There was a time I knew where I stood with my obsession: you went to a record shop and bought records, either in 7" single form or in 12" LP form. Then along came the 12" single, which took a little adjusting to but on discovering the potential for (a) extra tracks (b) juicy remixes and, most importantly, (c) superior sound quality, these, too soon became a vital part of the hoard. Then came the CD, which took me a few years to accept, I'll tell you. I was one of those folk very attached to the vinyl record and the CD looked like an alien invader but, eventually, I gave in and now my house is full of the bloody things, for good or ill. Of course, I sadly concede that the CD is now utterly passe but I cannot get into the whole MP3 downloading thing at all. Okay, I have dl'd a whole range of things and placed them on my groovy little MP3 player but I cannot accept as the norm and have reluctantly acknowledged that I'm being left way behind. The other day I walked into HMV in Cardiff and I realised that they must be selling less than half the amount of CD's they used to and most of these are now confined to the far end of the store, only to be accessed once you've passed the bloody X-Box games, Wii nonsense and other things I don't even know the names of.
What is happening? I know there has been a growth in good quality vinyl sales but have you seen the prices for an album? Out of my range. So, it now feels like I'm living in some kind of museum, sometimes wishing I'd kept many of the hundreds of vinyl records I've shipped off to various charity shops over the years, rather than looking at my rather depleted LP and 12" singles collection (the singles are either in the attic or under the stairs) and sighing inside. What has this all been about? How do I go forward? At the moment I'm still buying CDs but not anywhere near as often as I once did. Should I just accept that this collecting lark is inevitably finite? Perhaps I'll just have to get around to the whole downloading thing but at the moment I just can't get my head around it as a true reflection of a music lover's passion.
Leafing through my much shrunken 12" singles collection, I came across the above gem, which I haven't heard in ages. The original mix is the best but the one posted here is pretty groovy too.
